Shoebury Old Ranges (prior to development)

Before development

This is a record of Shoeburyness Garrison prior to development as a housing estate. I first gained access to the old MOD site in approx 2003 by crawling through a hole at the bottom of a chain link fence, and then scaling up a very steep bank to gain access to the seawall and old loading piers there.

Some friends and I spent a few years investigating the site and over those years, after the site had been sold to developers, access became very easy - but at the expense of all the miliary remains that were there - pillboxes, firing batteries, encasements and more - most of which have now been boarded up, vandalised or demolished.

Also, destroyed was a large park/nature reserve called Gunners Park which was built over the old firing range. This was completely and utterly destroyed, causing anger to locals. It is now a busy road with houses, ugly offices and other buildings.

To me, it was of more interest as a derelict site, then these miliary buildings and encasements were in tact.

Here is a friend's website (Southend Nick) with more information

Shoeburyness Garrison HQ battery - prior to development

I am trying to get sorted all of my investigations. Hard to believe this pic was taken nearly 10 years ago. At this point the site was completely derelict and I had to gain access by crawling through a hole in the bottom of a chain link fence. You can see the original seawall here and you used to be able to go down a ramp to the sea.

The site has since been sold off and developed. HQF is still derelict, but it has been boarded up and vandalised, and you can no longer go inside this building. Not enough has been done by the developers to protect the heritage of the site, nor indeed this listed building.

Amazing structure...I've never seen anything like it. It is a real shame that is not being taken care of.

Great composition and light to show off the textures! I hope this appears and remains in the Daily Photos Community. Your yesterday's photo appeared for a few hours and then disappeared for the remainder of the day!
