Daily

The Daily Community was a group run by Smugmug in its early days. Rather like a Flickr group where you could see people's latest photos and comment on them.

Smugmug ruined the community of the DC by removing this feature and fracturing the friendships that had grown in the community over a number of years. None of the contacts I made can now see when I upload a new photo and I cannot see theirs.

As a consequence, views on my photos dropped from about 20,000 a day to about 40 a day.

 • Tilbury WW2 radar tower, disguised as a water tower to fool invaders. Taken with my old camera, S9500.

 • Wallasea Island
 • Shoebury Garrison beach, standing on the remains of what wasa garden house at the Officer's Mess. That building was gutted by fire a few years back now and there is nothing left of the gardens that were once here.

There is a pillbox here, two searchlight emplacements and on the horizon you can see the giant Heavy Quick Firing Battery. This walk is pretty dangerous and requires clambering over concrete and jumping from place to place where the walls have rotted away. The object on the horizon is Grain Chimney, next to which is the fort I posted a picture of last week. Although it is only a couple of miles away across the sea, it is a horrendously long drive to get to.
 • Foulness Island sunset
 • Another sunrise shot. This structure is not a pier. It is the remains of a submarine defence boom. A massive chain used to be in place to catch U-boats. See my other picture for the size of the chain that held it:

On the horizon to the right you can just about see the four Red Sands Maunsell forts:
• This is Grain Tower Battery in Kent. You have to walk out along a tidal path about a mile into the sea at low tide. You can see that this was a Martello Tower that has had WW2 structures added. The chain was used to anchor a submarine boom. The thickness of the chain is the width of a man.
 • Coastguard at sunrise
 • Rainclouds over an old firing range in Essex. In this area are firing butts and pieces of dummy Atlantic Wall relics. You have to cross a river and go over an anti invasion ditch to get to these.
I stopped this down by -0.7 as light can be a bit harsh along the seafront.
Thanks to everyone in this group for your nice comments, emails and photography advice.
